Sutton United's young footballers return football to Collingwood Recreation Ground

After a period of nearly fifteen years, organised football finally returned to the fields of Collingwood Recreation ground care of a partnership between the London Borough of Sutton and our very own Football Development Team. With Tony Henderson-Smith providing bacon rolls and tea and coffee from Roses Tea Hut, last Sunday (25 September) proved to be a resounding success for SUFC Junior footballers and parents alike.

This was also an opportunity for our newly formed under 11 girls’ team managed by Jacky Allen to debut and supporters were not disappointed as the team ran out 4 – 0 winners in an outstanding cup performance.

Following a lengthy period of discussion between FDP representatives and the London Borough of Sutton, three pitches (1 full size, 1 intermediate and 1 junior) have now been laid in the Rec with pitch maintenance being carried out by our own contractor, Sportsturf.

Kevin Howard, SUFC Juniors’ Secretary said, “Sunday proved what a success Collingwood Rec can be in terms of bringing our junior section ‘home’. It is early days yet, but the pitches are excellent, the FDP Team has supported us by purchasing goals and equipment and most importantly the results went our way. I fervently believe that this is the future for us a Community Club.”

As many of you will be aware, bringing the Junior Section back to Collingwood is an integral part of our ground redevelopment plans with a multi-purpose sports pavilion and new stand occupying the far side of the ground. Discussions continue with the Surrey FA, Football Stadia Improvement Trust and the London Borough of Sutton and we hope to provide more information in the near future.

Over the coming season we intend to improve information on the Club’s website regarding the juniors’ results and fixtures and hopefully there will be regular features in future Matchday programmes with pictures and reports.

It will be great if our young footballers of tomorrow could receive your support so if you fancy some entertaining football on a Sunday morning why not make your way to Collingwood Rec. And help yourself to one of Tony’s bacon rolls – half price to SUFC season ticket holders………..

Manager Steve Griffin gives the Under 15's a team talk during the halftime interval.
