Manager Jimmy Dack admitted he was surprised by Sutton’s disappointing showing in the last game of the season against Cambridge, but he felt that lack of fitness might have been a factor. ‘’It did surprise me because I haven’t seen a performance like that since I joined,’’ he said. ‘’The lads have been brilliant, and I’ll still say that, but I was disappointed because I don’t like being associated with performances like that. I think it may have been the result of playing three games in the week. I said when I came in that the squad wasn’t fit enough, and maybe that told on Saturday. I took Nicky Greene off because he looked exhausted, and Warren felt his hamstring tighten which is why he was subbed, but I think they were all tired. They’ve had to do something close to pre-season training in five weeks at the end of the season, so maybe I’ve worked them a bit too hard.’’ He also felt the pitch was against good football. ‘’It’s the same for both sides, but Cambridge have beaten us 3-0 on our own pitch and we haven’t really adapted well enough. It’s never been the greatest pitch at the end of the season – it’s always been really good early on but then faded away, and the way we’re playing, with two wide players, it’s difficult when you get the ball to them, they push it in front of them and then it bounces up and hits them in the shin. We want to try and keep the ball on the ground, as I’m sure we’d rather play it that way with players with a bit of flair rather than just go out and get eleven robots, but the pitch doesn’t help that.’’ Jimmy, about whose future the club hopes to make an announcement after a board meeting on Thursday, admits it was maybe a good thing that he saw U’s play as they had done in some earlier games. ‘'Although I’ve got to make my own mind up,’’ he said, ‘’ I do listen to people and I saw some of the things on Saturday that I’d heard about, but ultimately I’ve got to go on what I see .’’ One player about whom Jimmy has made up his mind is defender Tom Hughes, who signed his first contract with the club after the game. ‘’He’s a good young player, local, and loves the club – all the boxes are ticked.’’ U’s have also exercised their option on Alan Bray and offered Warren McBean a new contract. ‘’I haven’t seen a lot of AJ because he’s been injured,’’ said Jimmy, ‘’but I know he’s highly thought of, while Warren can win you a game in a second.’’
