The U's began brightly with Gavin McCallum, playing wide left, looking particularly liveley. Barely 5 minutes had elapsed when McCallum played two give and goes to penetrate deep into the Hendon area, before pausing to curl a chip that bounced back off the post.Craig Dundas then robbed Casey Maclaren from a throw-in and ploughed his own furrow towards goal only for Lawrencin to save low down from his well-struck drive. Chris Collins was forced to put Byfield's cross over his own bar but Paul Nichols was pretty much a spectator for much of the half. Midway through the half McCallum collected a loose ball and jinked past two defenders before dragging a low 20-yarder just wide. A long ball out of defence did allow Bent to get in behind the Sutton defence but he ballooned his lob well wide of goal. A minute later the U's went ahead from a throw deep in their opponent's half. McCallum's quick feet allowed him to dance into the box and nobody contested the award of a penalty when he was tripped as he prepared to shoot. He took the kick himself and converted with ease. The loss of Palmer to injury just before the break proved important as U's struggled to find their shape after the interval.
Neither side really looked like scoring during the second period, although Byfield broke free just 45 second after the restart only to shoot wide. Dundas had one low shot easily saved after a lone run from half-way but Hendon managed to complete the whole 90 minutes without a shot on target. A flurry of substitutions briefly threatened a bit more goalmouth action but, at the end of the day, 1-0 was probably a fair reflection of proceedings. One of the high spots for the U's was a polished return to action for Alan Bray, who excelled at left back in a solid looking back-four.
