SUFC play our last group game against Spirrows FC today at 5:00pm, it's a must-win situation for Sutton and the score will determine if it's going to be an early exit or if the U'ś can grab that best losers' spot and get through to the next stage.
Last week the U's lost the second of their two group games with two goals conceded in each half seeing the U's community cup dreams put into Jeopardy after only 10 players reported for the game and the eleventh man coming in late into the first half but even so had to be stretchered off in the second half after suffering a broken ankle.
Harlem took the lead in the 27th minute in what apperead to be an offside but the benefit of the referee's doubt was given to Harlem's No.9 as he went round young debutant 15 year old goalie and just knocked the ball into the empty net. Banu Sanyang pulled one back JUST before the first half break for Sutton with a long range effort but Harlem restored their lead mid-way through the second half after their key player - Fax headed home a freekick as U's defender Nobu and young Clement Sylva fell short in communication and each hesitating to make a decision for the approaching ball between them.
The U's did try a come-back late on in the game but were a little too late. Now this result means that they MUST win their last group game to stand a chance of qualifying through the quarter finals as one of the two best losers
This final group game was postponed after a 15 year-old training with the local academy on the Feele Ba ground collapsed and died shortly before kick-off. The incident affected the players of both sides, especially the young SUFCG team, and the match was cancelled out of respect.
Sutton United extends its condolences to the family and colleagues of the tragic young player.
