After beating AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup final, Sutton's Under 16 team made it a cup double at the weekend when they beat NPL Youth on penalties to lift the Surrey County Cup. James Cottee scored for U's as the final finished 1-1 after extra time before Ben Clarke saved two penalties in the shootout which U's won 3-2. It's been a fine season for the Under 16s, who only just missed out on the league title and who have seen ten players go on to play for Sutton's successful youth team. The news is also good one year behind, with the Under 15s winning the Surrey Youth Premier Elite league championship, and reaching the League Cup final, although they were unable to make it a league and cup double., going down 2-0 to Tooting & Mitcham.
The game started at a frantic pass with both sides going close. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when NPL took the lead with a shot from the edge of the area. Sutton responded really well and nearly equalised with a curling free kick from the edge of the area from Lewis Wilson, only to hit the bar and be cleared of the line. Sutton continued to press forward and again hit the post before a well worked free kick from Jordan Bird found James Cottee to flick it in at the front post and make it 1-1.
The game got very intense with Sutton’s Ben Clarke making a good save just after half time. Sutton continued to have lots of possession and hit the woodwork again with shots from Josh Gallagher and Perry Sexton, but even with all their possession Sutton couldn’t get the decisive goal and the game moved into extra time and eventually a penalty shoot out. The CountyCup was finally won with Ben Clarke making two great saves and Sutton scoring three. This was a fantastic achievement and Sutton United is very fortunate to have such a promising side for their Youth team next season.
