So, what were you doing on 7th January 1989 ? Too long ago to remember ? Not if you are a Sutton United supporter !
That, of course, was the day that will forever be written large across the pages of English football history. The day the U's knocked Coventry City out of the FA Cup. Last night, at the Cambridge Hotel in Horley, all of the eleven players from the famous day gathered together again, to meet old friends, re-live their memories and, simply, have a good time. Manager Barrie Williams flew over from Spain, where he now lives, and Stuart Hemsley, who missed the game because of injury, also jetted in from Lake Placid.
Special guest was John Motson, who did the Match of the Day commentary, and he was joined by two other FA Cup heroes, Hereford's Ricky George and Leathehead's Chris Kelly. Other Sutton players to join in the fun included Rick Collier, Ricky Kidd, Dave Roffey, Roy Osborne, Ted Shepherd, Nick Sullivan, Mick Joyce, Steve Fowler, Ray Sunnucks and Graham Morris, an unused sub against Coventry.
The whole team will be getting together again on Wednesday when Sutton Veterans take on a celebrity/ex-pro side at The Lane in support of two local charities. 24 former U's stars have agreed to take part. Bring your camera and your autograph book, it should be a great night. |
