GAME OFF
because of snow
Sutton and Margate meet for the fourth time this season tomorrow when U’s visit the Kent coast in the Ryman League (travel details here). It’s the reverse fixture from the opening day of the season, when Stefan Payne projected himself in to the limelight with a hat trick as U’s began their season with a 4-0 win, but in September it looked as though Margate were set for revenge when they led U’s 2-0 at Hartsdown Park in the 1st qualifying round of the FA Cup, and then, after U’s had come back to force a replay, Margate led 2-1 with the replay entering injury time, but Danny Phillips equalised and Sonny Cobbs scored an extra time winner to send U’s on the run which ended at Hereford in the 1st round proper. Since then Margate have parted company with manager Terry Yorath, with Mark Butler moving from Ashford Town (Middlesex) to take over, and one of his first actions was to secure the services of Anthony Joseph, a former Ashford player, on a three month loan from Sutton, although under the terms of the loan he is not eligible to play tomorrow. U’s face being without Jason Goodliffe and Steve Perkins for the next fortnight as both are suffering from knee injuries, but there could be a debut for midfielder Nick McKoy, who has been signed after beginning this season with Grays. He has previously played for MK Dons, Cardiff, Torquay, St Johnstone and Enfield Town. More good news for U’s supporters is that James Norwood’s loan from Exeter has been extended for a second month. The weather could pose a problem for tomorrow’s game – Margate avoided the heavy snow overnight, although other areas of Kent were badly hit and supporters should check travel plans before leaving, but more snow is forecast for East Kent later on Friday. We will have the latest news on this site and on Clubcall on Saturday morning. One casualty of the weather is the FA County Youth Cup tie between Surrey and Liverpool at Gander Green Lane, which has been postponed
