Saturday 19 September – Suburban League Premier Division
SUTTON UTD 4 NORTHWOOD 1
Sutton's reserves extended their lead at the top of the Suburban League table to four points as they convincingly ended Northwood's own unbeaten league record. Bradley Woods-Garness almost gave U's an early lead with a shot that was brilliantly turned away by the goalkeeper, but Northwood also threatened early on as Paul Smith had to get down to save well at the foot of the post. U's went ahead after 25 minutes when Stefan Joseph laid a pass back for Dwain Williams to smash a shot in to the roof of the net, but within a minute a defensive mix-up ended with Smith bringing down a Northwood player and conceding a penalty which was converted. Smith had to make another good save before Elliot Mitchell restored U's advantage five minutes before half time with a perfectly placed effort from 25 yards. There was almost an immediate third as a Woods-Garness free kick was tipped on to the bar, although on the stroke of half time a poor back pass by John Cartledge might have led to an equaliser. Woods-Garness again threatened early in the second half but was twice just off target, but the third goal did come when Chris Beard volleyed in from close range after Daniel Harding had chested down Stuart Young's corner, and nine minutes later Harding scored himself with a good finish from a Woods-Garness cross. Woods-Garness continued to have little joy in front of goal as he shot wide twice and had a shot saved, while Harding was also denied by the keeper as U's finished strongly.
