Tuesday 29 September – Surrey Premier Cup 1st round
SUTTON UTD 2 STAINES LAMMAS 0
Two goals in the last twenty minutes enabled Sutton to shake off the challenge of Staines Lammas and secure a place in the next round of the Surrey Premier Cup. U's started strongly with Tommy Kavanagh having a 20 yard shot saved after only three minutes, although the visitors were almost ahead two minutes later when a low shot went just wide of the post, and the early stages were end to end with Chris Beard's shot blocked for a corner which led to a goalmouth scramble before Staines could clear, and Joe Hart coming to the rescue at the other end, clearing when Paul Smith was out of position. As the half went on, though, U's began to take control, with Stuart Young's cross tipped on to the bar by the keeper, and after Daniel Harding had missed a couple of chances to give Sutton the lead John Cartledge did find the net on the stroke of half time when he headed in a corner but the effort was ruled out for a foul on the keeper. The second half followed a similar pattern as an Elliot Mitchell header was acrobatically saved and Harding curled a shot against the bar, but the breakthrough finally came with a good run and cross from Harry Ottaway on the right, Kavanagh scoring from close range. Dwain Williams hit the post from a free kick as U's looked to finish off their opponents, and it was Stuart Young who did clinch things with a header from Michael Hunte's cross. Youth teamer Ope Fashoro appeared for the last ten minutes and might twice have added to the score but for good saves.
