Saturday 24 September – Suburban League
AFC WIMBLEDON 3 SUTTON UTD 1
Sutton never recovered from conceding three goals in the first 31 minutes, although having pulled one back just before half time they did put the home side under late pressure but with no reward. Laurence Jelley was out to dive at an opponent's feet in only the second minute, but seven minutes later Wimbledon went in front when a low cross ran through to a striker who scored from close range, and within another two minutes it was 2-0 thanks to a 20-yard free kick. U's briefly threatened a fightback as Rob Hughes clipped the top of the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area, but just after the half hour a looping header from a left wing cross extended Wimbledon's lead. Only a mis-hit shot averted a fourth minutes later, but just before the interval a fine pass from Elliot Mitchell gave Karl Douglin the chance to pull one back from twelve yards. U's occasionally threatened after half time as Bajrush Halili headed just over and saw another shot deflected over the top, but the closest to a goal came at the other end when a close range header smacked against the crossbar. Sutton finished strongly, though, with Matthew Robinson twice denied by good saves, with the rebound on the second occasion falling for Chris Sessegnon whose shot hit the far post.
