Sutton's visit to Maidstone United turned out to be a frustrating afternoon, although the U's controlled the majority of the match they lacked that final ball and when chances did come they were wasted. The Stones threat came from free kicks and high balls into the box which the Sutton defence struggled to cope with and it was from one of these instances on 33mins the decisive moment of the game came. A free kick high into the box was flicked on and struck Karl Murray on the arm. Referee Mr Wood answered Maidstone’s claims positively with a decision that was slightly harsh considering that Murray had little time to react. Ex Arsenal midfielder Ian Selley converted the penalty.
