Sutton United reached the 1st round of the FA Cup for the first time in 10 years and were awarded a home tie against League 2 side Notts County. In front of a crowd of 2041 U's had an opportunity to avenge their somewhat unlucky defeat at Meadow Lane some 15 years earlier in the same competition which saw Sutton go down 2-3 somewhat controversially. On a rain soaked afternoon U's showed early promise but failed to capitalise, as the game wore on the League 2 side gradually gained control with some slick passing although the Sutton defence was in no mood to let them through. It took until the 75th mins for the break through to come when Butcher headed home the only goal of the game to give Notts County the win, and although the U's rallied they were unable to find the equaliser.
