Sutton travelled to Hertfordshire in the 3rd qualifying round in an attempt to go beyond that stage for the first time since 1999. Within 7 minutes Sutton found themselves behind to a superb finish from ex Enfield and Slough forward Hammatt who end a swift break away move with a finish which hardly gave U's keeper Nicholls time to move. Apart from the odd visit up field U's lay siege to the Ware goal which seemed to live a charmed life with woodwork, an amazing off the line clearance and what appeared to a foul inside the box only given as a free kick, somehow keeping the U's out. The second half continued in the same vein and with the time start to ticking away there was always a fear that the home side would get a 2nd on the break. With just 10 mins left on the clock Steve West managed to get on the end of a low cross to level the scores to the relief of the travelling supporters. That relief turned to joy just 2 minutes later when Billy Dunn struck the winner in what turned out to be a very hard fought victory if a nerve racking one.
