Wednesday 27th January - Surrey U18’s Midweek Floodlit Cup
Sutton United 9 Chipstead 2
Sutton came flying out of the blocks in this, their first game in more than two months and were 6-0 up in just over half an hour to wrap up the victory. A spirited start to the second half saw Chipstead claim two goals and put alot more pressure on the U’s but three late goals and a magnificent six goal haul from Joe Wornham eased Sutton to victory.
Sutton started off brightly and were soon into their stride, and with just three minutes on the clock Joe Wornham cut in from the right on the edge of the box, beat two defenders and shot into the bottom corner. Josh Gallagher then claimed a loose ball 20 yards out but shot just wide, but Sutton made it 2-0 soon after when Chris Sessegnon raced down the right, played a one-two with Wornham, and beat the keeper from 8 yards. Wornham soon made it 3-0 with a bit of a scrambled goal closely followed by James Page getting on the score sheet when a Robbie Drewett corner was pushed out to him by the Chips' keeper and he poked it in from close range.
Around halfway through the 1st half Elliot Orris came out bravely to beat the oncoming Lancefield to the ball after a header back into the box following a Chipstead free kick which gave them their first chance of the match. Elliot Tomkins then looped a high ball into the box from the right, a cross cum shot maybe that almost caught out the keeper, all he could do though was palm it to Wornham who followed up well to claim his hat trick from a yard out. Chipstead then had another half chance that was snuffed out by the U’s defence. Wornham then claimed his fourth racing onto a through ball and prodding just past the keeper with barely half an hour on the clock. The goal rush calmed and Chipstead came more into the game with no real chances coming until late on when Lewis Wilson broke from his own box and sent Sessegnon away who attacked the Chipstead box and had a good shot parried wide for a corner.
Page had an early chance he put just wide at the start of the second half but Chipstead came out fired up and soon pulled back a goal to reduce the deficit. Following a corner that was cleared to the edge of the box, Ben Walters rose to loop the ball over Orris in the Sutton goal from the subsequent cross. The away side had their heads up and had pulled another back a couple of minutes later when after James Young missed a ball into the box, Lancefield turned well and blasted past Orris. Wornham shot wide across goal after an excellent through ball from Page and Sessegnon chipped over the bar, and although Chips had a speculative effort from 20 yards go over the bar, Sutton finished off the job late on when Sessegnon again beat the full back and made the by-line, laying back to Wornham who placed the ball firmly into the net. Jordan Bird then tried his luck from a similar distance as Tomkins earlier in the game on the opposite flank and this time all the keeper did was get a touch on it not able to prevent it from going in to make it 8-2, with Bird not realising it had gone in until almost back into his left back position expecting a goal kick. Wornham finished off his haul thanks to a good Lewis Lovelock ball in from the left. He could have made it seven but his shot was blocked after Ope Fashoro pounced on a defensive mistake and squared to Wornham, but he will have been happy enough with his efforts for the evening and a good team performance.
