Ryman Youth League – Thursday 25th March

Chipstead 0 Sutton United 1

Bajrush Halili’s 7th league goal of the season early in the first half was enough to keep Sutton’s unbeaten record going with a gritty performance against a resolute Chipstead side brimming with confidence after ending Kingstonian’s unbeaten record the previous week.

Halili’s goal required persistence when Chris Sessegnon ran through midfield, setting James Page clear, retaining his place after Ope Fashoro tweaked his knee in the warm up, his shot was well saved, Halili had a shot blocked before reclaiming the ball, laying off to Page whose shot was again blocked, then Halili took a touch and slotted past the keeper from the right side of the penalty area. Will Lancefield was given space in the Sutton area to equalise soon after but lobbed the ball over Elliot Orris’ crossbar. Elliot Tomkins had a similar opportunity in space but his header went wide from a Robbie Drewett free kick. The first half was a pretty even affair with Sutton shading it, though the game had few chances after the early goal.

The second half was also one of few chances on a pitch that had had quite a downpour during the day and a heavy shower just before kick-off. A Kien Millington ball wide to Sessegnon sent him away down the wing, beating his man and making the by-line before Lewis Wilson had his shot saved.  Dan Faulkner erupted from defence down the wing only to see his cross into the area easily taken by the goalkeeper. Jordan Bird on as a substitute hit a shot just over the bar and a Drewett free kick hit the corner of the cross bar and post. The last chance of the game fell to Joe Wornham who shot wide  following a good turn. There was some brief Chipstead pressure in the second half but it was dealt with easily and it looked as though there would be only one winner following the Halili goal.
