REPORT: U’s begin pre-season with win

14 July 2021

Sutton opened up the pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win in this hastily arranged game at The Meadow.

After Brentford had been forced to withdraw from the scheduled game at Farnborough, Southern League Chesham stepped in to host U’s, and it was a successful run out for Matt Gray’s team, fielding a different side in each half. Playing down the slope in the first half, U’s had the better of the earlier stages and it was Academy graduate Kylian Kouassi who came closest to scoring when he met a cross from the lively Enzio Boldewijn with a header which was tipped on to the post by Chesham goalkeeper Sam Beasant. The keeper also kept out Boldewijn’s 20 yard effort, while Alistair Smith just failed to connect with a Will Randall cross.

The second half saw a complete change of personnel, with one triallist alongside Ben Goodliffe at centre back, and it was the triallist who instigated the move that gave U’s the lead nine minutes after half time with a crossfield pass which was collected by David Ajiboye, who outpaced his marker and cut in along the by-line and past the keeper before tapping in. Adam Lovatt and Ricky Korboa both had shots saved, while Chesham had a brief spell of pressure which produced a couple of corners and some dangerous crosses, but with five minutes left a pass down the left from Rob Milsom allowed Korboa to get in behind the defence and his cross was headed in by a diving Craig Dundas to put the game out of Chesham’s reach.
