Friendlies begin tonight at Dorking

5 July 2022

A programme of six pre-season friendlies for Sutton begins tonight with a trip to Meadowbank to face Dorking Wanderers.

Dorking have already played one friendly this season, winning 5-0 at Roffey on Saturday, as they look forward to a debut season in the Vanarama National League after being promoted from National League South through the play-offs, a thrilling victory in the final seeing them equalise against Ebbsfleet after nine minutes of stoppage time before winning in extra time.

There will be a number of familiar faces in the Dorking side tonight, with Saturday's side at Roffey including midfielders Josh Taylor and Jack Jebb, the latter signed in the summer from Dartford, and striker Harry Ottaway. Midfielder Adam Mekki, formerly with Bromley and Ebbsfleet, and striker Ryan Seager from Hungerford are also additions to the squad as Wanderers prepare for their National League season.

U's supporters will have a first chance to see summer signings Jack Rose, Sam Hart and Kwame Thomas as Matt Gray plans for a second season in EFL League Two, which begins with a home game against Newport on Saturday July 30.

Tickets for tonight's game can be bought on line here, or at the gate - the match is segregated so Sutton supporters should use the away supporters' turnstiles. Prices are £8 for adults, £6 for concessions (over 60, students with valid ID), £4 for under 18s and £2 for under 8s. On site car parking is not available and supporters are advised to use the nearby St Martins Walk car park, other town centre car parks which are within easy walking distance and often quicker to exit after the game, or surrounding streets. The ground is just over ten minutes' walk from Dorking station.

Supporters unable to attend can follow a free live commentary on our Mixlr service - note that it will be on Mixlr, not iFollow which will not be used until the EFL season starts. You can find the commentary at mixlr.com/sufctv. It's worth mentioning now that this service will not be available for Saturday's game at Havant as the home club will not permit any live audio commentaries, including by their own service, for their home pre-season friendlies.

Match report for Dorking Wanderers 1 Sutton United 2

5 July 2022

Dorking Wanderers 1 (Barden 8 og) Sutton United 2 (Wilson 11, Randall 73)

Sutton began the pre-season schedule with a victory at National League newcomers Dorking Wanderers, recovering from Jon Barden's early own goal to win 2-1.

U's fielded a different side for each half, with Sam Hart making his first appearance in a Sutton shirt in the first half as part of a defence in front of new signing Jack Rose in goal, with two triallists also included, and it was one of those who went close early on before Donovan Wilson ran on to a long pass from Louis John and tried to lob goalkeeper Slav Huk, who clawed the ball away.

Dorking took the lead after eight minutes, Alfie Rutherford's low cross turned in to his own net by Jon Barden with Ryan Seager lurking at the far post. It took Sutton only three minutes to level, though, as Wilson pounced on a defensive mix up between Jordan Cheadle and Huk to slot the ball in to the net.

Wilson might have had a second a couple of minutes later, again taking advantage of poor defending but this time seeing his shot come back off the angle of post and bar, and before half time Enzio Boldewijn saw a firm shot blocked by Huk while a triallist headed over from a free kick.

The half time interval saw a complete change of personnel, with Roman Charles-Cook at right back and Kwame Thomas up front, and U's had the first opportunity of the second period as Will Randall was denied by a good save from Dan Lincoln, who had replaced Huk as one of a number of Dorking changes which also saw former Sutton striker Harry Ottaway come in to the action. Lincoln had to be alert to save moments later as a free kick was deflected goalwards in the six yard box, and made another stop to keep out Ali Smith's shot as Sutton created the better chances, although Coby Rowe was booked for a heavy challenge as a triallist had been in the first half.

Randall went close again twenty minutes from time after good work by a triallist and Adam Lovatt, his shot going just past the post, and Ben Goodliffe headed just over from Rob Milsom's free kick. U's weren't to be denied, though, and it was Randall who scored what proved to be the winner when he chipped a ball in to Thomas and continued his run to receive the return pass and shoot past Lincoln, although it took a good late save by Brad House to deny Seager an equaliser.

Sutton: First half: J Rose, J Barden, S Hart, C Eastmond, triallist, L John, triallist, K Kouassi, D Wilson, H Beautyman, E Boldewijn. Second half: B House, R Charles-Cook, R Milsom, C Rowe, B Goodliffe, A Smith, triallist, A Lovatt, K Thomas(sub C Dundas 85), triallist, W Randall
