Sutton v AFC Wimbledon preview and latest ticket news

18 August 2023

It's local derby day at the VBS on Saturday as Sutton face AFC Wimbledon in a Sky Bet League Two clash (kick off 3pm).

Tickets are selling out very fast, and we now have limited availability for the home terraces. To guarantee coming to the match we urge you to purchase in advance via the following link.

If tickets are still available on Saturday, they will again be on sale on line and from the club office between 12 noon and 1 pm. If any are left thereafter, they can be bought from the ticket booth next to the club shop. Ticket prices are £21 for adults, £15 for concessions and £7 for ages 12-18. Tickets for under 12s are free if bought in conjunction with an adult or concession ticket. Seats cost £4 more in all cases. Please note that any tickets bought in person at the club on Saturday will carry an extra £2 charge, an increase which does not apply to tickets bought on line at any time, but we would urge you to purchase NOW to avoid disappointment as we cannot guarantee tickets will be available to buy on matchday and will update on the availability status as appropriate through our social media channels.

On the pitch Wimbledon will be looking to extend their unbeaten league record which has so far seen them draw away to Grimsby and at home to Wrexham, then win at Colchester on Tuesday. After a disappointing season last season which saw Wimbledon finish just five points above the relegation zone they made a number of signings in the summer including two players familiar to Sutton supporters in Omar Bugiel and Josh Neufville. Jake Reeves has taken over the captaincy after signing from Stevenage for a second spell with the Dons, while James Tilley, signed from Crawley, has scored all three of Wimbledon's league goals so far. Paul Kalambayi, Huseyin Biler and Jack Currie are all likely to remain on the sidelines with injury.

Like Sutton, Wimbledon also progressed in the Carabao Cup with a dramatic win over Coventry, Ryan McLean, another summer signing from Hereford, scoring the winner and they look forward to a trip to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday week in the second round.

After crushing Notts County on the first day of the season and a penalty shootout win over Cambridge, Sutton have lost the last two league games but will hope to bounce back against a side who U's beat home and away last season. Craig Eastmond scored the only goal at Plough Lane, while Will Randall and Bugiel were on target in the return over the Christmas/New Year period. Harry Smith serves the second game of his three match ban following his red card at Barrow, but Ryan Jackson, who has missed out through injury so far, may be fit to return to the squad.

Saturday's referee is David Rock, a regular visitor to the VBS over the years who was at the ground most recently in July for the friendly against Reading. His last EFL game at Sutton was against Northampton in April.

The home fanzone will be open from 12 noon on Saturday, with our friends at Signal Brewery offering a happy hour between 12 and 1 when all beers will be £3.50 a pint. In addition, local band Lucky Hit will be providing live music from 1.45pm, so why not come along early and soak up the summer sun that is forecast while enjoying a pint and live music.

Supporters not travelling can listen to a full audio commentary through our iFollow service, and overseas supporters can watch the game live. For the audio commentary in the UK, passes can be bought for £2.50, but monthly passes are available for £4.49 and season passes for £45, both excellent value. Overseas supporters can watch every game, with a match pass costing £10. Again monthly passes are available at £25 and a season pass at the early bird price of £140 until the end of August. Match report for Sutton United 0 AFC Wimbledon 3

19 August 2023

Sutton United 0 AFC Wimbledon 3 (Johnson 64, Pell 80, Tilley 86)

A difficult week for Sutton ended with three goals conceded in the last half hour as Wimbledon continued their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League Two season and moved in to the top three. For three quarters of the game it was a tighter game than the scoreline suggests, and had Josh Coley's shot early in the second half gone in rather than hitting the post, and Ben Goodliffe's header not been superbly saved by Alex Bass just after Wimbledon took the lead there might have been a different outcome, but Dons added two goals in the last ten minutes and were ultimately well worth their victory.

The visitors were the quicker out of the blocks despite playing in to a strong breeze, and could have gone ahead when Josh Neufville, one of two members of Sutton's squad last season to be in the Dons' starting eleven, crossed low and the ball ran through to James Tilley, whose low shot was well saved by Jack Rose with his legs. Omar Bugiel, the other former U in the line-up, had a shot saved, and U's survived a couple of goalmouth skirmishes, but Sutton came more in to the game as the half progressed, and Harry Beautyman headed over before Coley knocked back a deep Rob Milsom free kick only for Wimbledon to clear inside the six yard box.

There was a blow for Sutton as Omar Sowunmi was forced off through illness just before half time, but U's started the second half brightly and came very close when Bass could only push Milsom's cross as far as Coley on the edge of the penalty area and his shot rebounded back off the post. Omari Patrick's shot was saved as the attack continued, and Scott Kashket later just failed to get on the end of a long pass from Goodliffe, but having failed to make the most of their best spell of the game, Sutton were on the back foot again and extremely lucky to survive when Tilley's deflected shot looped against the underside of the bar and came down, with Ali Al-Hamadi heading against the bar from close range from the rebound when it looked easier to score. It was only a brief reprieve, though, as Lee Angol was penalised for a foul on Isaac Ogundere after Sutton had cleared from Al-Hamadi's header, and Tilley's superb inswinging free kick was headed in by Ryan Johnson.

Sutton almost levelled immediately when Angol was fouled on the left, and an equally good free kick from Coley found Goodliffe diving in with a firm header which Bass managed to keep out, but it was as close to scoring as U's were going to come. Ten minutes from time Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson made a double change at a corner with Harry Pell, one of the players brought on, going straight in to the penalty area and heading in Jake Reeves' corner at the far post with his first touch. That just about clinched things, and six minutes later the final blow was struck as U's gave the ball away in midfield, Reeves sprayed a long pass out to the right to Tilley, and the former Crawley struck cut in past Milsom and drove his shot beyond Rose in to the far corner of the net.
