Crawley v Sutton preview, important supporter and travel information

29 September 2023

After the disappointment of Tuesday's Carabao Cup exit at Port Vale, Sutton return to the battle for Sky Bet League Two points on Saturday with the short trip to Crawley Town. Sutton will be in all white.

The Sussex side have made an excellent start to the season despite being tipped to struggle before the season had started, and currently lie in fourth place in the table, having won four of their five league games at the Broadfield Stadium, from where only Gillingham have come away with a victory. Their one major setback came at manager Scott Lindsey's former club Swindon, where they were on the wrong end of a 6-0 thrashing.

Sutton will take heart from the fact that Crawley are one of the two clubs, Harrogate being the other, against whom U's have won all four league games since being promoted in 2021, with last season's games seeing Sutton win 2-1 on Boxing Day and then 3-0 at the VBS in March, since when U's only league win was the hammering of Notts County on the first day of this season. U's will make late calls on several players who missed Tuesday's game with minor injuries, with manager Matt Gray hoping that most will be available for selection.

Saturday's referee is Paul Howard, in his fourth season as an EFL referee, who was last in charge of a game involving Sutton when Walsall were the visitors to the VBS last season.

Tickets will be on sale at the ground on Saturday from the ticket office or the ticket cabin, cash or card accepted, with standing and seated accommodation available in the KR-L (North) terrace or the East Stand. Terrace prices are: Adults £15; Concession (age 60+/student with ID) £10;Age 17-20 £5; Age 14-16 £4, but free if bought with adult or concession ticket. Under 14 free with paying adult. Seat prices are £2 more for adults and concessions but unchanged for the other categories. Tickets are available on the day from the ticket cabin or ticket office at no extra charge, cash or card accepted. Ambulant disabled supporters pay the relevant price, with a carer admitted free.

Following poor spectator behaviour at a recent home game Crawley have introduced heightened security measures with effect from Saturday's game and we have been advised that these will apply to Sutton supporters as well. Any supporters going to the game should read this article before leaving for the game. In particular supporters should note the ban on rucksacks being taken in to the ground. The turnstiles will open at 1.45pm on Saturday, and supporters are advised to get to the ground as early as possible to avoid any congestion caused by these enhanced measures.

The Supporters' Club coach, which is fully booked, leaves at 12.30pm

Due to Saturday's rail strike it is not possible to get to the game by train, but it is an easy ground to get to by road, the ground being adjacent to the A23 just north of junction 11 of the M23 (postcode RH11 9RX).  While there is no on-site parking for spectators, there are free car park spaces in the William Reed car park at Broadfield Park, on your left between the M23 and the ground, within five minutes' walk of the stadium. The car park closes an hour after the game.

Elsewhere on Saturday our academy side travel to Cambridge United for an 11.00am kick off at Clare College Sports Ground. However the Barclays Women's Championship game between Crystal Palace and Sheffield United, which was due to be played at the VBS in the afternoon, has been postponed on compassionate grounds following the tragic death of Sheffield United player Maddy Cusack last week.

Match report for Crawley Town 3 Sutton United 0

30 September 2023

Crawley Town 3 (Campbell 6, Maguire 53, Orsi 66) Sutton United 0

Sutton were unable to reverse the recent poor run of form in Sky Bet League Two as Crawley moved in to second place in the table, but although the win was ultimately a comfortable one for the Sussex side Sutton will rue not making the most of a first half spell in which U's were on top but had two goals ruled out for offside and saw several other chances go begging. That came after a slow start, though, which had seen U's go behind after just five minutes, and a second goal early in the second half from a free kick that U's felt should have been in their favour left the home side in a powerful position that was reinforced by Danilo Orsi's tap in midway through the second half.

It took Sutton fifteen minutes to get started in the game, and by then Crawley already had the lead. A patient build-up on the right had pace injected in to it by a quick exchange between Ronan Darcy and Ben Gladwin, whose low cross was met first time by Adam Campbell with a shot that beat Dean Bouzanis low to his left. Once U's did get in to the game, though, they had much the better of the rest of the half and should have at least been level. Aiden O'Brien turned the ball in from close range after Omar Sowunmi had headed down Christian N'Guessan's corner, only for the offside flag to go up, and the same player was denied by the flag again soon afterwards with U's this time very unlucky as another Sowunmi header was met by Lee Angol's volley that hit the post before O'Brien touched it over the line. U's also had loud penalty appeals turned down when Sowunmi appeared to be man-handled by Williams as a cross came in from the right. Omari Patrick went close as well with a strong run and shot which was blocked by Corey Addai's legs, but should have done better when the ball fell to him in the penalty area but his unconvincing volley went wide of the near post.

Sutton came out on the front foot in the second half and won two free kicks in good positions which came to nothing, but then had to make a change in goal as Bouzanis went down after taking a goal kick and had to come off with a hip injury. Jack Rose came on, and within a minute was called in to action as referee Paul Howard infuriated Sutton by penalising Joe Kizzi in a challenge with Nick Tsaroulla when it seemed as though he had himself been fouled. Jay Williams met Liam Kelly's free kick with a glancing header that was brilliantly turned aside by Rose, but the feeling that it wasn't Sutton's day was heightened as Darcy fired the rebound back across goal and the ball flew in to the roof of the net off Laurence Maguire, who seemed to know little about it. U's continued protests about the award of the free kick saw assistant manager Jason Goodliffe yellow carded.

Sutton almost replied immediately as Patrick and substitute Josh Coley combined superbly on the right before Patrick's powerful shot was tipped acrobatically over by Addai, but U's hopes of getting back in to the game received a terminal blow when Darcy was put in on the right and crossed low for Orsi, who couldn't miss. Crawley were able to play out the last quarter of the game pretty much as they liked, briefly sitting on top of the table thanks to Notts County's struggles at Colchester, and might have had more goals as Darcy flashed a shot just over the bar and Rose produced another top-class save to turn Rafiq Khaleel's powerful shot on to the post, with Sutton increasingly frustrated and unable to make any impact on the home team's lead.
