Sutton United 3 Tonbridge Angels 1

2 August 2016

Sutton ended their pre-season campaign with a victory tonight against Steve McKimm's Tonbridge, who included former U's Damian Scannell and James Folkes in their line-up. U's gave appearances to former Southampton youth goalkeeper Will Britt and Bristol City Academy graduate Joe Morrell, a Welsh Under 19 international, and the latter impressed throughout with some incisive running and passing, deservedly being voted the Man of the Match. Sutton went in front in the 25th minute when Dan Wishart broke down the left and pulled a low cross back to the edge of the penalty area for Bedsente Gomis to send a shot low in to the corner of the net. There was a chance to double the lead when Jack Doherty charged down a clearance and the ball ran through to Bradley Hudson-Odoi, but he was unable to beat the advancing Anthony di Bernardo, while Wishart clipped the top of the crossbar with a free kick. U's made three changes at half time, including an appearance for Academy player Fred Hill at left back, and although still on top they were rocked just after the hour when referee Nigel Lugg spotted some pushing as a free kick came in and awarded a penalty from which Luke Allen equalised. A minute later, though, Sutton were back in front when Chris Dickson guided a deep Gomis cross just inside the post. They should have had a third when Gomis's low shot was pushed on to the post by Di Bernardo, who then brought down Dickson as the striker tried to pounce on the rebound, but Gomis, so impressive from the spot last season, sent an awful penalty high and wide. Five minutes from time U's did extend their lead, though, when Craig Dundas turned on the right of the penalty area and toe-poked a shot beyond Di Bernardo in to the far corner of the net. Aidan Brown and Jack Strange, members of last season's youth team who featured in the Surrey Senior Cup, both appeared in the second half and Brown caught the eye with some lively attacking play.
