Slovakia comeback spoils Louis debut

5 June 2016

Louis John became the first Sutton player since Paul Rogers in 1989 to score for the England C team this afternoon as he scored twice having come on as a first half substitute, but saw the edge taken off his debut as Slovakia Under 21s came back from 3-1 down to grab victory with a controversial winner in the last of six minutes' stoppage time. The visitors went in front through Lukas Haraslin, but Bromley centre back Jack Holland headed an equaliser before limping off injured to give Louis, who was only called in to the squad on Saturday, his chance and almost immediately the Sutton player bundled the ball over the line to put England in front, and early in the second half his glancing header from a corner made it 3-1. Dan Wishart then joined his Sutton team-mate on the pitch, but Slovakia quickly pulled a goal back through captain Tomas Huk, and substitute Michal Fasko then levelled. On a hot afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,527, most people would have felt the draw about right, but Louis was then penalised by the Danish referee for what seemed a good tackle on the edge of the penalty area, and Fasko drilled the free kick in to win the game for Slovakia. England: Hall (Ebbsfleet) Bolton (Halifax), Habergham(Braintree), Henegan(Chester), Holland(Bromley), Gallagher(Aldershot), Leesley(Alfreton), Woodyard(Braintree), Southwell(Boston), Whitehouse(Nuneaton), Goddard(Swindon). Subs Butler(Hemel Hempstead) for Hall; John(Sutton) for Holland; Wishart(Sutton) for Bolton; Sweeney(Maidstone) for Whitehouse; Williams(Barrow) for Southwell.
