U's sign Slough cup star

10 January 2019

We're pleased to welcome James Dobson to Sutton United after the 27-year-old winger moved from Slough Town today for an undisclosed fee, signing a two and a half year deal. James impressed in both FA Cup games between the sides in November (below in the first game), and it was his ferociously struck free kick that sent the replay at Arbour Park in to extra time before Slough prevailed on penalties. He originally joined Slough from North Leigh in 2014, and after spells with Harrow Borough and Aylesbury he rejoined them at the start of the 2016-17 season, finishing as leading scorer in each of the next two seasons. Earlier in his career he played for Oxford United, Oxford City, Witney and Burnham.

Manager Paul Doswell said: ''I was very impressed with James last season, and his performances against us in the FA Cup and then against Gillingham convinced us to be in the race to sign him when we knew he might be available. We need another left-footed player in the squad for balance, and he's got fantastic ability in dead-ball situations, which will improve us no end. His goals and assists record has been excellent and as a character he will fit seasmlessly in to our dressing room. I would like to thank Neil Baker and Jon Underwood for their help with this move and their belief in James to do well at Sutton.''

James is ineligible for Saturday's FA Trophy tie at Spennymoor having played for Slough in an earlier round.
