MANarama’s September assessment: Sutton’s monthly inspection - and what’s in store in October?

4 October 2019

League sponsors Vanarama hope you will get involved as MANarama makes a very big return!

Vanarama's Sam Elliott gives his own outsider's view of the season so far - at Sutton and beyond.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...

It was a mixed bag last month but that's nothing less than manager Matt Gray expected. Outplaying Wrexham away and Notts County at home, the thrashing of Chesterfield was one of the best performances in years but ending a positive month with two 2-0 defeats will be a frustration

What about the others in September?

It was a busy old month. You may have heard, but Yeovil Town didn't do too badly - they won all six last month but it was Bromley still leading the way. It's not been too bad for Barrow either - five straight wins is their best run since 1968. Hot shot Boreham Wood striker Kabongo Tshimanga also managed to score six times. Only Woking and Maidenhead were winless.

The high point?

No doubt about this one. The U's were “relentless” as they battered Chesterfield 4-0. A result which may take some topping.

Star performer…

Harry Beautyman (above, celebrating his goal at Wrexham) had another great month and got another three goals from midfield. Special mention must go to Aaron Jarvis.

Stat attack:

Talk about fine lines. Although on paper it wasn't a great month with one win from six, the opposition only scored one more goal than Sutton in September.

From the dug-out….

Matt Gray knows the score. “We've played some huge clubs this month Chesterfield, Wrexham and of course Notts County and Yeovil who were in League Two last year,” he said. “September was never going to define our season.”

How do things compare to last September?

Few months will stack up to last September in fairness. Four fantastic wins over Maidstone, Havant, Wrexham and Leyton Orient left the club just a few points off top spot. There was Scottish Cup success in there too.

Attendance watch:

A season high of 2,056 watched the draw with Notts County, the average gate for this campaign now stands at 1,646.

What does October look like?

Some teams whose form isn't sparkling are around the corner. Stockport County, Ebbsfleet, Solihull and AFC Fylde will all be looking for improvement in October. The month ends with current second place side FC Halifax paying a visit.
