Match report for Havant & Waterlooville 1 Sutton United 2

9 July 2022

Havant & Waterlooville 1(Prior 20) Sutton United 2 (Thomas 48, Beautyman 57 pen)

Sutton's second pre-season friendly followed a similar pattern to the first as U's went behind before goals from Kwame Thomas and a Harry Beautyman penalty turned the game round in the Hampshire heat. U's fielded 22 players again, changing two of the outfield starting line-up at half time and the remainder with an hour gone, soon after Beautyman had scored what proved to be the winner. Omar Bugiel and Joe Kizzi featured having missed Tuesday's game at Dorking, but Ben Goodliffe (groin) and Adam Lovatt (knee) were sidelined by minor injuries.

One of Havant's summer signings, Gianni Crichlow, caused U's an early problem when he broke down the left and sent in a low cross which was cleared well by Rob Milsom, who at the other end saw a low free kick held by Havant goalkeeper Charlie Searle as Louis John tried to get a touch at the near post.

Another left wing move from Havant saw James Roberts send in a low shot which was comfortably saved by Jack Rose, while Searle again had to be careful when Enzio Boldewijn's looping header threatened to dip under the angle of post and bar.

The breakthrough came for Havant after nineteen minutes as a lack of communication between Rose and John led to a needlessly conceded corner, and Billy Clifford's flag kick from the right was glanced in at the near post by another summer signing Jason Prior, the ball hitting the far post on its way in.

Boldewijn went close to an equaliser ten minutes before half time when he deftly controlled a crossfield pass from the triallist centre back and drifted in before hitting a shot that was fisted away at full stretch by Searle, but U's suffered an unwanted injury just before the break when Rose went off with a groin injury and was replaced by Brad House.

U's made two more changes at half time, Roman Charles-Cook and Kwame Thomas replacing Kizzi and Bugiel, and within three minutes Thomas had provided the equaliser with a powerful header from a cross by the right wing triallist. Ten minutes later U's had turned the game round as Boldewijn was tripped by Paul Rooney and Harry Beautyman scored from the penalty spot. It might have been 3-1 soon afterwards when Donovan Wilson, lively after the break, broke down the left and pulled the ball back for Boldewijn, whose shot was saved low down by Searle.

That was the cue for U's to replace the eight players that hadn't come off at the break, which meant a debut for Josh Neufville, signed earlier in the day on a season-long loan from Luton, and the pacy winger might have marked his first appearance with a goal when a misplaced header from former U's favourite Jamie Collins allowed him to burst through and hit a low shot that was blocked by Searle's legs.

U's had to block a couple of shots as Havant looked for the equaliser, but were able to hold on to make it two wins out of two so far.
