Match report for Sutton United 3 Bromley 2

23 July 2022

Sutton United 3 (Smith 50, Randall 75, Milsom 81 pen) Bromley 2 (Reynolds 13, Krauhaus 84)

Sutton finished off the pre-season campaign with a victory against National League Bromley that looked unlikely during an indifferent first half which saw Bromley lead at the break to turn the game round with three goals before a late Bromley strike gave the scoreline a more representative look.

Playing in to the wind in the first half, U's struggled to make any impression on a Bromley side who threatened from the start,  with Billy Bingham's shot deflected just wide inside the first two minutes, and after Jack Rose had been off his line quickly to divert Michael Cheek's effort away for a corner the resulting corner produced the simplest of goals as Omar Sowunmi headed back from beyond the far post and Callum Reynolds turned the ball in from close range for the first goal of Bromley's pre-season campaign. They should have had a second midway through the half when Cheek ran on to a pass on the right but unusually for him was inaccurate with a finish that went wide of the far post.

As Bromley continued to dominate, Rose tipped over a Corey Whitely free kick, and just before half time Whitely went through on the right but under pressure from Louis John could not find the power to beat Rose, who was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers as Bromley's triallist was untroubled although Ali Smith did have a shot deflected just wide, and Donovan Wilson just failed to collect an Omar Bugiel pass.

The second half began in similar vein, Reece Hannam blazing a free kick over the bar after a foul by Ali Smith, but from nowhere U's levelled as Will Randall's cross was turned behind for a corner, and Milsom''s near post delivery was slightly untidily turned in by Smith, the ball bouncing in to the ground and in to the net over the covering defenders. Smith almost had a second soon afterwards when U's best move of the game saw Wilson cut in and square a pass which was allowed to run by Randall for Smith, whose shot went just wide.

The tone was set for a much more even second half, but with few clear chances. U's had to make a change when Louis John seemed to suffer a groin injury and was replaced by Coby Rowe, while Bugiel and Wilson made way for Kwame Thomas and Josh Neufville soon afterwards. Fifteen minutes from time it was U's who went in front when Enzio Boldewijn was put through on the right by Craig Eastmond, and his low cross ran through for Randall, who underlined his impressive pre-season form with a shot in off the underside of the bar.

Having put U's in front, Randall then had a hand in U's third as he was fouled in the penalty area and Rob Milsom converted the spot kick, but Bromley were back in it when Jude Arthurs fired in a cross that was pushed out by Rose but rebounded in off Ben Krauhaus, who seemed to know little about it. However it wasn't enough to prevent U's ending the pre-season campaign with a victory.

Sutton: J Rose, J Kizzi, R Milsom, C Eastmond, B Goodliffe, L John(sub C Rowe 66), E Boldewijn, A Smith, O Bugiel(sub K Thomas 69), D Wilson(sub J Neufville 69), W Randall.
