Quick fire goals send Sutton through

20 November 2022

A blitz of four goals in nine minutes either side of half time saw Sutton ease through to the next round of the London & South East Women's Regional League Cup at Bromley.

After a fairly even first half in which Cassie Brown had missed Sutton's two best chances and Zoe McNulty had made a fine save with her legs in a one-on-one situation, U's went ahead on the stroke of half time when, under pressure from Brown as she chased a through pass, home defender Mercedes Broomfield sent the ball past her oncoming goalkeeper in to her own net.

Less than a minute in to the second half Brown was finally on the scoresheet when she shot home from just inside the penalty area, and she had soon doubled her tally, exchanging passes with Olivia Watson and scoring at the second attempt after her first shot had been saved. Two minutes later Darcy Wells added a fourth when she hooked the ball in to the empty net after the goalkeeper had saved from Beth Hull, and inside the last five minutes Sutton widened the margin of victory as first substitute Kelly Whelan scored from the edge of the penalty area and in stoppage time Hull cut in from the left before sending a low shot in off the post.

The reserves and Under 21s both went out of their respective cup competitions, with the reserves beaten 10-0 at Welling in the Capital Intermediate Cup and the Under 21s going down 7-0 at Leyton Orient in the Capital Junior Cup.
