After the longest trip of the season on Saturday it's back to the VBS on Tuesday night as Sutton host Gillingham in Sky Bet League Two.
Gillingham are one of three sides to have won both their games this season, with Robbie McKenzie's goal enough to beat Stockport at Edgeley Park before Ashley Nadesan, a summer signing from Crawley, scored the only goal of the game against Accrington on Saturday. Between those two league wins, Gillingham achieved one of the stand-out results in the first round of the Carabao Cup, beating Southampton 3-1 at The Priestfield to earn an away tie at Premier League Luton.
That start will not have been a surprise to many, with Gillingham widely expected to be among the challengers for promotion after a strong end to last season was followed by some notable signings during the close-season, former Welsh international Jonny Williams, from Swindon, and former Leyton Orient defender Shadrach Ogie among the new arrivals who were added to at the end of last week by striker Macauley Bonne, who left Charlton earlier in the summer.
One player who left the Kent club during the summer was Scott Kashket, who U's will hope has recovered from the injury which kept him out of Saturday's game at Barrow, especially with Harry Smith beginning a three match suspension following his red card, and the club's subsequent unsuccessful appeal, on Saturday.
Referee Scott Tallis is in his first season as an EFL referee and making his first visit to Sutton, although he did take charge of games at Notts County and Boreham Wood in U's National League championship season in 2020-21.
