Sutton v Doncaster preview

17 February 2023

After Tuesday night's thrilling win against Swindon, Sutton will be looking for more success at the VBS on Saturday when Doncaster Rovers are the visitors.

It's a meeting of two sides in good form, with Sutton beaten once in the last nine games and Doncaster coming in to the game on the back of three straight wins without conceding a goal, a run that followed three consecutive defeats. The sides are next to each other in the table just outside the play-off area, with Doncaster in 9th, two points and one place ahead of U's who would leap-frog Rovers with victory on Saturday.

The sides met at the Eco-Power Stadium in August, with Sutton seemingly on course for victory thanks to Donovan Wilson's first half goal, only to be stunned by injury time goals from George Miller and Kieron Agard that gave Doncaster the points. This isn't the first season in which the sides have been league opponents, as back in the 1999-2000 season both clubs were in what was then the Nationwide Conference, each winning their home game 1-0 (below, Mark Watson scores the winner at Sutton).

Another side to have changed manager this season, Danny Schofield having replaced Gary McSheffrey in October a month after his brief spell at Huddersfield had ended, Doncaster lost Kyle Knoyle and skipper Adam Clayton during the January window to Stockport and Bradford respectively but among signings was right back James Brown, who played for Stockport against U's in October. Midfielder Harrison Biggins is a doubt after missing the last three games through injury but defender Adam Long could return after a hamstring strain.

Sutton will be without Craig Eastmond and Omar Bugiel on Saturday, the former serving the last game of the two match ban he picked up after being sent off at Hartlepool last week, while the latter begins a two match suspension after reaching ten cautions this season. Manager Matt Gray will make late decisions on Louis John, Rob Milsom and Will Randall.

Referee Darren Drysdale is making his second visit of the season to the VBS, having taken charge of the game against Tranmere in October. He also refereed the game against Oldham last season that was U's first home game in the EFL.

Tickets for Saturday's game are on sale on line here, price £20 for adults, £14 for concessions and £6 for under 18s. Tickets for under 12s are free when bought in conjunction with an adult or concession ticket. There is a £5 increase for a seat.
