We were sorry to learn that John Shears, one of our Amateur Cup Final team in 1963, passed away on Monday at the age of 84.
John made 147 appearances for the U's and is remembered as a hard tackling defender who was always 100% committed. He represented Surrey at both cricket and football and had been on the books at Wimbledon before joining the U's in 1961 and then playing against the Dons at Wembley. John left us in 1965 to join Tooting & Mitcham, and subsequently played for Woodmansterne FC and was responsible for introducing Micky Joyce to the club. In recent years John has been a regular visitor to the club, and was always a source of laughter in the bar. We send our sympathies to his widow Barbara and sons Euan and Gavin.
