Sutton United 2 MK Dons 1

20 February 2024

Sutton's academy side rounded off the EFL Youth Alliance South East Division season as Vinnie Tume scored twice in a 2-1 win over MK Dons at the VBS Community Stadium.

The win ensured Sutton would finish fourth in the final table, insuring against a late Leyton Orient surge, and will compete in Merit League One when the league divides in March.

With a number of the younger players who have played recently unavailable because of school commitments, U's had a more experienced line-up than recently, with Ollie Khinda, Lanseny Traore and Oscar Williams all involved, and should have led by more than the one goal at half time, but the one U's did score after ten minutes was an excellent effort, with Khyan Edwards sent down the right and using his pace to beat the defence and cross low for Tume to score.

Joden Trickett and Cameron Sullivan both shot just wide, and Edwards had a volley saved, as Sutton had the better of the first half, but MK were a much livelier proposition in the second half and scored a deserved equaliser when a defensive slip allowed a striker to go round Sam Morgan and score in to the empty net. At that stage the visitors looked the likelier winners, but with five minutes to go the goalkeeper came to punch clear a Sullivan cross but could only direct the ball to the feet of Tume, who shot past the covering defender in to the back of the net.

Team: S Roberts, O Khinda, C Sullivan, L Moore, O Williams, J Eccleston, K Edwards, L Traore, V Tume, J Trickett, G Vorster. Subs n/u J Phillips, L Jones, J Marquis.

The top five teams in the South East Division, Luton, Stevenage, AFC Wimbledon, ourselves and Leyton Orient will now join those in the top half of the South West Division, probably Plymouth, Swindon, Cheltenham, Portsmouth and Oxford, in Merit League 1, teams playing each other once, and we will announce the fixtures when we have them.

Sutton United FCtv spoke to Academy Manager Jimmy Dack after the game and that interview will be available later.
