Dillon De Silva signs for U's

24 May 2024

We are delighted to confirm the signing of former Wealdstone player Dillon De Silva.

The exciting young forward joins with plenty of pedigree at fifth tier level and will bolster the U’s frontline with his exceptional speed and technical skills, as well as his agility and sharpness on the ball.

Born in Camden Town, London, De Silva had an unsuccessful trial at Arsenal, later beginning his career with rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the age of 11, where he spent three years. After departing White Hart Lane, a brief stint at Barking preceded a move to Queens Park Rangers, where he rose through the ranks and featured a handful of times on the bench during the 2020/21 season.

In search of regular football, De Silva aided his development with a successful loan move to the National League in 2022/23, with Torquay United signing him on an initial one-month deal that was later extended. The winger appeared 26 times in all competitions during his debut season in Devon, scoring four times as the Gulls were relegated to the National League South, but despite this, would move to Plainmoor permanently following his release from QPR.

He would go on to make a further 20 appearances in the sixth tier, but was released midway through the campaign and returned to the fifth tier when he joined Wealdstone a day later. While short-lived, the 22-year old’s time in Ruislip proved to be successful, starting seven of the eight games he was involved in to help the Stones avoid relegation, contributing two goals in the process.

Away from club football, De Silva also represents Sri Lanka on the international stage, and has been involved with the Golden Army since his first call-up in 2021 ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon and South Korea. He made his debut as a substitute in a 3-2 defeat against the former, and later scored his first international goal in a group stage match against Nepal in the 2021 SAFF Championship. To date, he has 14 caps to his name along with two goals – his second coming in a 2-0 win over Bhutan in the 2024 FIFA Series.

After securing his signature, manager Steve Morison said “I’m really excited by Dillon’s arrival. Our new recruitment process flagged Dillon towards the end of the season and we monitored him and saw exactly what the data had given us.”

“He is exciting on the ball in 1v1 situations and likes to go forward when he gets the ball, but also has excellent defensive qualities being diligent in his work tactically.”

“He’s got a great pedigree and has taken steps back to rise again and I’m really pleased he has decided to join us on our journey and hopefully he can rise together.”

Welcome to Sutton United, Dillon De Silva!
