Steve Arnold extends deal

21 May 2024

We are delighted to confirm that Steve Arnold has signed a contract extension ahead of the 2024/25 National League season, keeping him at the VBS Community Stadium until the end of the campaign.

Arnold, 34, joined the U’s last year after a productive two-year stint at Southend United, and has tallied up 15 appearances this season since making his debut against Grimsby Town as an enforced substitute. The experienced goalkeeper has had to compete with Jack Rose and Dean Bouzanis for the number one spot, but Arnold eventually prevailed, playing every minute of the final 13 games as Steve Morison’s side took their relegation fight to the final day of the season.

The England C international has racked up more than 250 career appearances, having come though the ranks at Norwich City following stints in the youth teams of Boreham Wood and Arsenal, and after being released from Carrow Road, made 18 appearances for Grays Athletic during the 2008/09 season.

He went on to play for Eastleigh and Wycombe Wanderers where he featured sparingly, prior to a successful loan spell at Hayes & Yeading United which catapulted him to regular League One football when Stevenage announced his arrival in May 2012, going on to appear 31 times for the Boro.

Arnold would later go on to play for Forest Green Rovers, Dover Athletic, Gillingham, Barrow, Shrewsbury Town and Northampton Town, featuring in the 4-0 League Two play-off success with the latter against Exeter City.

He then joined Southend in July 2021, being voted the club’s Player of the Season at the end of his first campaign with the Shrimpers, before departing Essex in 2023 due to the club’s financial difficulties.

Manager Steve Morison was thrilled to keep Arnold on for another year, stating he was “buzzing for the big man to re-sign for the club.”

“He was huge for us once I put him between the sticks and one of my biggest regrets since taking over is not doing it sooner.”

“He’s a great guy on and off the pitch and it’s great place to start our re-build with the big man back for another season.”
