Sutton United Walking Football and The Change Foundation

20 May 2024

Earlier this month, the Sutton United Foundation Walking Football Team and The Change Foundation combined to play some friendly matches at The Change Foundation's centre in Beddington.

The Change Foundation has had a Walking Football group in existence since 2016, with 45 signed up members, and the day with Sutton United provided an opportunity to bring two groups of walking sport participants together where we split up the teams, so they were able to mix in together, feeling a sense of community and play some friendly matches against one another. Six teams of about six players per team, and everyone got to play against each other once. The day went very well and was great to see the groups being able to celebrate the amazing impact that walking football and feeling part of a community has on those who take part.

Bobby Childs, Head of Foundation at Sutton United said “Thanks to Ryan, Billy the coach and all The Change Foundation walking football players for hosting us at The Change Foundation in Beddington for the walking football tournament and social. It was the first time our walking footballers had done a warm-up in years so that woke them up and then mixing in with The Change group in teams they played a round-robin format of 6-a-side games lasting twelve minutes each and were thoroughly satisfied and exhausted at the end of the morning.”

Fred Varndell, who leads the walking football at Sutton United said:“We had a great morning at The Change Foundation walking football session. All the players enjoyed the games at a well organised event played on a beautiful grass surface!”

Ryan Jones, Programme Manager at The Change Foundation shared “The day with Sutton United was a huge success, it was a great way of bringing both groups together, allowing them to meet new people and feel part of a community. There was plenty of laughter and some of them brought out their competitive streak. We hope we can replicate days like these in the near future.”

The Sutton United Foundation run sessions on Wednesday mornings at Goals Soccer Centre in North Cheam, and further details can be found here
