Sutton’s EFL Youth Alliance campaign began with defeat at the David Weir when, despite having the majority of the game, they lost to a Wycombe side who showed a clinical touch in attack, scoring with two of their three clear chances and rattling the post with the other.

Sutton started brightly but went behind in the 12th minute when a right wing cross was only cleared as far as Nsemi Bassega, who curled a well placed shot inside the left hand post. U’s came close to an equaliser when James Fennelow volleyed wide from a long Dan Urpens throw, while Junior Eccleston outjumped visiting keeper Jonny Pettitt to meet a free kick but was unable to direct his header on target.

Wycombe nearly doubled their lead on the counter attack just before half time when Bassega’s low cross ran through to Micah Olabiyi, whose ferocious first time shot from the edge of the penalty area crashed against the post and out to safety.

Sutton were denied an equaliser early in the second half when Charlie Bell’s long range effort was well saved by Pettitt, and fell further behind with seventeen minutes to go as the impressive Bassega again broke down the left and this time his cross was turned in to the net by Cameron Stones.

Almost immediately Pettitt made another good stop to keep out a low Ronny Ruiz shot, but Sutton were unable to make any further impact on the visitors’ defence.
