Academy graduate Charlie Bell spoke positively about the future, after capping off a memorable breakthrough season in Sutton’s first team with his first professional contract.
Speaking after signing his deal, the young midfielder admitted it was a proud moment as he officially began his professional career with the club he has risen through.
“It feels good, it’s an honour to play for Sutton, to sign my first contract as well.”
“One of the best moments was scoring in my debut, but everything really, being around the squad, travelling away, away games, playing, all good experience and hoping for much more.”
Bell’s journey this season has seen him progress from the academy into regular first-team involvement, with some standout moments along the way, including an unforgettable debut goal.
The transition into senior football has come during a period of change at the club also, with the midfielder earning his opportunity under Chris Agutter, an experience he says has been hugely positive.
Furthermore, he had the chance to develop and rise among some familiar faces around him from the academy, something which has also helped to settle into life at first-team level, with fellow graduates making the same step up.
“I’ve really enjoyed it. I think Agi’s been great, he gave me a chance and just helped me develop in that as well.”
“I also played with Junior as a scholar, same team, he was the captain at the under-18s when I played, it’s been great to play with him in the first team as well.”
Alongside those familiar teammates, Charlie has also had the chance to learn from experienced senior players who have competed at higher levels of the game.
“I’ve learned a lot, I like experienced players that play in the National League and the leagues above, just keep learning from them and just enjoy playing with them.”
With the season now moving past the halfway point and his professional future secured, Bell is focused on continuing his development and helping the team push on.
“My aims are just for the team to keep progressing well, move up the table, get some more wins and myself just try and get my place in the team.”
