Chris Vagg is someone who has a long association with Sutton United, and he has now been recognised for his commitment and devotion to the club.

Chris is a well known face on matchday and has been a volunteer at the club for multiple seasons, being an almost ever-present on matchdays running the away turnstile, but is always a willing volunteer whatever the occasion.

He also volunteered to play for the team – and unlike others his dream came true back in 2005 when injuries to Andy Iga and Phil Wilson forced John Rains to play the 41-year old Vagg in goal.

Standing in between the sticks in an FA Cup match against Eastbourne Borough, the emergency keeper was tested for the first time after ten minutes when an Eastbourne forward tried his luck from 30-yards and forced Vagg into a strong save to his left. Furthermore, despite the U’s needing to play Vagg in goal, Sutton were able to progress to the Third Qualifying Round with a 4-3 victory.

After many seasons missing multiple minutes and often goals, Chris has decided to leave his post as the friendly face welcoming away supporters at the end of the season. We would like to thank Chris for the service he’s put in as turnstile operator over the course of almost 50 years, and were delighted to name him as our Clubman of the Season at our End of Season Awards’ Dinner last Thursday.

We wish Chris all the best for the future.
