Take a look at the contenders below…
Goal A
David Ogbonna vs AFC Telford United – 1st November
David Ogbonna broke the deadlock five minutes before half time against AFC Telford United, paving the way for Sutton to dispatch of the National League North side in the Emirates FA Cup First Round.
A left wing move that looked to have fizzled out was revived as Junior Eccleston played in Jayden Harris on the left, and his low cross was deftly flicked home by Ogbonna, a strike made better by a backflip celebration, giving Sutton a crucial lead at the VBS Community Stadium on his return from injury.
Goal B
Lewis Simper vs Eastleigh – 5th November
A flowing and confident first half display from Sutton saw David Ogbonna give his side the lead when he finished off a superb team move – via Nick Townsend parrying a Jayden Harris shot into his path – and just after the half hour mark the second goal come in arguably even sweeter fashion.
An inauspicious start to the move saw the U’s give the ball away inside their own half, but a superb tackle from Edon Pruti not only averted the danger, but also released Lewis Simper to burst forward, exchange passes with Ashley Nadesan, and slot his a first-time left foot shot beyond Townsend in to the corner of the net.
Goal C
Kai Jennings vs Truro City (Second) – 22nd November
On-loan midfielder Kai Jennings continued his impressive run of form, particularly in front of goal, by sealing a brace late on against Truro; the third and final goal in a topsy-turvy affair that saw the Tinners come back from 2-0 down to level moments earlier through a couple of Lirak Hasani strikes.
A repeat of the Wealdstone outcome would have been U’s supporters’ fears, but two minutes later Brandon Njoku was put in on the right and pulled back a cross which was eventually laid back by Lewis Simper to Jennings, who took a touch before volleying powerfully home from the edge of the penalty area and restoring Sutton’s lead which this time they held.
Goal D
Lewis Simper vs Gateshead – 29th November
Lewis Simper adding another outstanding strike to his showreel, giving Sutton the lead early on in the second half as Sutton swept past Gateshead.
The first five minutes of the second half proved the decisive period as the U’s came out from the break on the front foot, and within 30 seconds of the restart Jake Taylor, Simper and Jayden Harris linked well to release Junior Eccleston on the right and he laid the ball back to Simper, who won last season’s Goal of the Season with an effort against Gateshead and who set up the possibility of a repeat result with a stunning, dipping, curling shot from 25 yards out.
Goal E
Kai Jennings vs Shrewsbury Town – 6th December
While it proved to only be a consolation, Kai Jennings will have won all the plaudits in Sutton’s 2-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town with an outstanding opening goal.
It no more than the U’s deserved when they went ahead with 20 minutes left; Jennings’ corner drifting in over Will Brook and landing in the corner of the net.
Goal F
Lewis Simper vs Wealdstone – 21st February
Lewis Simper added a touch of class to extend Sutton’s lead three minutes later after Hayden Muller had given the U’s the advantage against Wealdstone.
A superb first touch brought Besart Topallaj’s cross-field pass under instant control on the right, and he then cut inside before placing a shot beyond Baptiste in to the far corner of the net.
Goal G
Kai Jennings vs Hartlepool United – 3rd March
Kai Jennings blasted perhaps his best strike in a Sutton shirt, sealing all three points in a memorable midweek away day in County Durham.
Goal H
Charlie Bell vs Rochdale AFC – 28th March
Charlie Bell drew first blood with an outrageous finish against league leaders Rochdale with a goal worthy of winning any game.
After a rapid counter-attack from Ian Henderson’s offside goal, the U’s worked it to David Ogbonna who showed good strength to shield the ball before winding up for a powerful, arrowed strike that flew past Ben Winterbottom and into the top corner, giving the U’s the lead against all the odds.
