Getting to the Ground

Stadium Address:

VBS Community Stadium

Gander Green Ln

Sutton

SM1 2EY

By Car

Travel along the M25, exiting at Junction 8. Then travel north on the A217 for about 15-20 minutes. Ignoring signs for Sutton itself, stay on the A217 to the traffic lights by the Gander Inn (on the left), turn right into Gander Green Lane. The Borough Sports Ground is about 200 yards up this road on the left hand side. If you reach West Sutton Station you have gone too far.

On matchdays, the club car park in Gander Green Lane is for parking permit holders only. Away fans should park in Gibson Road, the local municipal car-park. It takes no more than 15 minutes to walk from Gibson Road to the stadium. Click here for more information regarding parking, while a map of Gibson Road can be found here.

By Rail

It is recommended that visiting supporters use Sutton station, which is on the main lines out of Victoria and London Bridge and is at the top end of Sutton High Street, about 20 minutes’ walk from the ground. Two buses between Morden and Sutton stations run conveniently close to our stadium: route 413 bus goes down Gander Green Lane, and number 80 runs along Collingwood Road. The ground can then be reached by taking the path through Collingwood Rec.

West Sutton railway station is adjacent to the ground. It is served by Thameslink trains via Wimbledon or Sutton. Come out of West Sutton station and turn right into Gander Green Lane and the ground is about 100 yards further along. Away fans should walk past the main entrance and after about 70 yards turn right into Collingwood Recreation Ground, where the away turnstiles 5-8 are situated.

By Bus

The 413 service runs past the ground down Gander Green Lane. The bus leaves Sutton town centre from outside the main post office. The 80 route from Hackbridge to Belmont runs down Collingwood Road. The ground can be reached by taking the path through Collingwood Rec. Both routes also connect with the Northern Line at Morden.

London Buses are now cashless. Fares are a flat £1.75, and this includes multiple journeys within a one-hour period of the first “touch in” with a contactless payment card or Oyster card.

Accessibility

All accessible entrances will be open as detailed in the stadium map below:

We currently have spaces for ten wheelchair users (seven home, three away) and we would ask anyone who needs to use this facility to book in advance (contactus@suttonunited.net). If any wheelchair user needs to park at our stadium, please let us know in advance and we will make arrangements to welcome you. We have accessible toilets at both ends of the ground and in the main stand. Ambulant supporters will need to climb a handful of steps as there are currently no lifts.

For more information, supporters can access the club’s FAQs, which can be found here.

Full Fan Guides for both home and away fans can also be accessed here.

Footballing activities will be available in the fanzone, including table football, as well as the bar and club shop being open.

Last Time We Met

What always looked a hazardous FA Cup assignment for Sutton proved exactly that, but Chris Agutter’s side survived in the competition thanks to a goal from Jayden Harris in the eighth minute of stoppage time, the third time U’s had levelled in the game.

Coming up against a side unbeaten in their 14 league and cup games this season, the U’s were immediately on the back foot as Owen Dean escaped the attentions of Jack Taylor on the Farnham right and crossed low for Darryl Sanders, who had time to turn inside Will Tizzard and shoot low past David Aziaya and Harry Phipps on the goalline.

It almost got worse before it got better for U’s, as before five minutes were up a quick free kick sent Owen Dean clear of the defence, and U’s were grateful to Aziaya for a fine save to avoid going two down. However U’s then went to the other end and forced two corners, the second of which was taken on the right by Lewis Simper and headed powerfully in by the unmarked Phipps for his first goal in Sutton colours.

The second half started in much the same way as the first, with Farnham out of the traps quickly, and Bobby-Joe Taylor went free down the right and crossed low for Sanders to sweep the ball beyond Aziaya. Again U’s keeper came to the rescue moments later, Owen Dean left clear after a mistake by Phipps, but Aziaya coming out to save well, and again U’s had soon equalised, Njoku turning the ball in from close range after Harris had put David Ogbonna in on the left to cross low.

Njoku was through again almost immediately from the kick off, rounding Oualah but failing to get enough on his shot to beat the covering defender, and remarkably Farnham went straight to the other end to regain the lead. Taylor again led the attack on the right and this time crossed with the outside of his left foot, and it was third time lucky for Owen Dean as he made no mistake with a crisp volley that gave Aziaya no chance.

Sutton’s attempts to retrieve the situation looked to be fruitless. However one last attack on the left saw Njoku put in by Noa Boutin, and his cross gave Harris the chance to keep U’s in the cup and a powerful finish left nothing to chance.

Played for Both

Ricky Wellard

Former midfielder Ricky Wellard played for Sutton during the 2014/15 season, before ending his 18-year playing career two years ago at Farnham Town.

After coming through the ranks at Ashford Town (Middlesex), Wellard turned out for AFC Wimbledon and Salisbury and helped them both win the play-offs in the Conference Premier and Conference South respectively, either side of a brief stint at Cambridge United, which followed a single season in League Two.

This preceded a move to Gander Green Lane in 2014, where he appeared 30 times across the campaign as the U’s finished 15th in the Conference South, one year prior to their title-winning campaign which saw them reach the National League under Paul Doswell.

Wellard wasn’t a part of that team though, having made the switch to Welling United after a single season in South London, and followed it up with spells at Hemel Hempstead Town, Wealdstone, Hampton & Richmond Borough and a short-lived return to Salisbury, before moving to Bedfont Sports in 2019.

Three years with the Eagles was then followed by a move to Farnham in 2023 – then in the Combined Counties Football League Premier Division South – reuniting with manager Paul Johnson and assistant manager Jimmy Hibburt having played under them both at Bedfont Sports.

Putting the cherry on top of a successful career, Wellard got to end his playing days with silverware, being a part of that team went invincible at Step 5, going unbeaten as they gained promotion to the Isthmian League, before departing ahead of another historic season that saw the Town achieve back-to-back promotions to the Southern League.

Since retiring, he returned to Sutton to coach the Academy, and is currently a Coach at AFC Bournemouth under manager Andoni Iraola.
