Sutton’s fourth pre-season friendly is a game against Brentford’s B team on Saturday, originally intended to be played behind closed doors but now being played at Wheatsheaf Park, the home of the former Staines Town FC, where U’s were frequent visitors, the last meeting with Staines coming in February 2015 when Ricky Wellard scored the only goal of the game for Sutton, a strike which was subsequently voted Goal of the Season.
Brentford B won the Premier League Cup in the 2022-23 season, when U’s supporters might remember the VBS Community Stadium hosting their quarter final win at home to Arsenal. They went on to beat Fulham in the semi final and Blackburn in the final. However last season they failed to get out of the group stage, their only win in their six group games coming at home to Leicester.
