Welling finished 17th in National League South last season, having been at that level since being relegated from the National League at the end of the 2015-16 season. Their pre-season campaign has been similar to Sutton’s, with four wins and two defeats, and on Tuesday they beat National League Ebbsfleet 1-0, the winner coming from Elliot Long, his sixth goal since signing in June from Wingate & Finchley.
Welling and Sutton last met competitively in the 2012-13 season when goals from Harry Beautyman, who would later play for the Wings, and Kyle Vassell, gave U’s a 2-2 draw. Welling finished that season as champions, although U’s would have the better of the meetings, winning the return game at Gander Green Lane 2-1.
