Kenny Davis free kick the winner

Posted: 15th September 2020

A free kick from Kenny Davis eight minutes from time was enough to tip this friendly in Sutton’s favour. U’s created more chances, but had to wait until they had made changes to all but one outfield position before finally breaking the stalemate.

Will Randall had the best effort early on, cutting in from the left and shooting just wide, while at the other end Dean Bouzanis had to gather two low shots, but U’s did have a let off when the referee originally awarded a penalty against Coby Rowe as he brought down a Dulwich player following a free kick, only for an offside flag to switch the decision in Sutton’s favour.

Soon afterwards it was Dulwich’s turn to be grateful for an assistant’s flag as David Ajiboye collected a pass from Callum Kealy and fired in a low cross which was turned in by Tobi Sho-Silva, who had strayed marginally offside.

Craig Eastmond went close for U’s when he won possession in midfield, surged forward and drove a low shot just wide of the post, and as Sutton started the second half in a similar vein as Ben Wyatt found himself well forward and shot just over, while Ajiboye, a threat whenever he got the ball, saw a fierce shot turned over by the Dulwich goalkeeper.

Sutton, who were missing Ben Goodliffe, Omar Bugiel and Harry Beautyman through injury, made six changes around the hour mark, Davis the only non-triallist to be introduced, and he might have scored when he found space from a free kick but headed over. Three more changes came with just under 20 minutes left, and it was a triallist who won the free kick just outside the penalty area that Davis, who had been forced off at half time at Haringey suffering from blisters, curled between the goalkeeper and his right hand post.

There might have been a second when the triallist who had scored on Saturday met a left wing cross at the far post but saw his shot bounce off the crossbar and over, but the one goal proved enough to maintain U’s unbeaten pre-season record.
