Sean Miles emphasised the determination required in order to return to winning ways, after Sutton lost 2-1 against Yeovil Town.
The S&C Coach, who has recently stepped in to fill in a makeshift Goalkeeping Coach role, took on post-match media duties after watching on as Sutton fell to defeat at home to the Glovers, with Aaron Jarvis’ late penalty sinking the hearts of the home crowd after Charlie Bell’s cracking equaliser shortly before.
“I thought in the first half we were exceptional” he said. “I thought we built our play up really well, all the passing patterns that we’ve been working on in training, just that finishing touch at the end, got ourselves in really good areas, we just needed that little bit of clinical edge, a little bit of cold heartedness in front of goal.”
“I was really pleased, especially with Jack Taylor, bringing that ball out, centre-back stepping in. Really good combinations into our wing-backs, but ultimately, we know it’s about goals. Goals win games, and we do need to be better at that.”
With the U’s trailing at the interval, work had to be done to rectify the scoreline in the second half, and Miles revealed what was said in the dressing room at full time, claiming it was something which was certainly on show after the break.
“Just got to keep going. You can see every game they play, they put in the effort.”
“OK, we’ve got staff doing various roles, we’ve got players stepping in, we’ve got academy lads stepping into first team football. What more can we ask? OK, it’s just that little bit of finishing touches, I think we’ll be good to go.”
Mo Dabre made his third start for the club after recovering from a reoccurring hamstring injury, and offered a real dynamic performance in the centre of the park, with the Italian again showing why he was brought in from Tonbridge Angels in the summer.
“I thought he was exceptional in the first half. Again, you know what you’re getting with Mo. He’s a live wire in the middle of the park.”
“He’s disciplined, wins the ball, plays it out wide, very simple, but we have a duty of care. He’s only just come back from a recent hamstring injury and we knew he’d only have 60 minutes.”
As for the goalscorer, Bell notched his second goal in three games after scoring his maiden Sutton goal away at Woking last week, and followed it up with a thunderous strike that arrowed into the top corner to get his team back on level terms.
“I think I’m just reiterating what’s already been said about the academy boys that have come in.”
“We all know that, you can see the subs bench there as well as the actual starting lineup, products of the academy, and we should be supremely proud of these players, and again, not just from a technical, tactical and physical point, just fits right in. He’s a great guy, always learning.”
On the subject of players newly introduced into the team, David Aziaya displayed a composed and confident league debut after being called upon late on, replacing Jack Sims in the starting XI during the warm-up, and Miles revealed the nature of Sims’ knock.
“He just had a bit of a spasm in his back, so he hadn’t even really got the warm-up going, so that sort of threw a little bit of a spanner in the works there.”
“I thought David [Aziaya] was exceptional, actually. I thought it was good with his feet, made a great stop in the first half and yeah, on was he go. He [Sims] should be fine for the next game.”
