Steve Morison gave an honest assessment following Sutton’s defeat to Scunthorpe United.
The U’s fell to a second loss in a row against the Iron, as goals from Declan Howe, Oli Rose and Danny Whitehall prevented the hosts from securing their first win of the campaign despite taking the lead at the start of the second half.
“Another defeat, that’s exactly what it is” Morison said. “Fair play to the lads, kept going when we went down to ten men, just couldn’t quite get the equaliser, but yeah, it’s not good enough.”
In a disappointing afternoon on the whole, one notable moment saw Jack Taylor notch his first senior goal for the club, having broken into the first team last season after returning from his loan spell at Hampton & Richmond Borough. Taylor’s rise is a testament to the superb work done by the Sutton academy, alongside Junior Eccleston who, after signing his first pro contract in the summer, made his second substitute appearance of the season on Saturday when he replaced captain Aaron Jones.
“He’s [Taylor] been up and down this season., but yeah, I was pleased for him to get a goal. Obviously, it’s always good and we look dangerous from set plays, to be fair. Yeah, look, obviously, Junior, I thought, come on and was excellent as well. So, yeah, obviously, credit to the football club. And yeah, they deserve to be a part of something a bit better at the minute.”
With another quick turnaround on the horizon with Sutton to face Rochdale AFC on Bank Holiday Monday, Morison opted to make a key change which brought a second goal of the season for Brandon Njoku, who made his first league start for the club and put Sutton ahead two minutes into the second half with an excellent header.
“He [Njoku] deserved to start. Obviously, Naders played again Wednesday and obviously we’ve got another game Monday so I was just trying to utilise the squad and give Brandon a start and I thought he was excellent, to be fair. Should have and maybe could have had more goals, but he was a great cross, great header, and yeah, we should be going on and winning the game from that Monday.”
“We now recover; pool session at the hotel tomorrow and then get ourselves up and ready to perform against another team top of the table, unbeaten. It’s going to be a tough afternoon.”
