Sutton United FCtv spoke to an emotional Steve Morison after the U’s fell to defeat away at Forest Green Rovers.

The Head Coach watched on from the sidelines as his side were condemned to a 4-0 loss at the hands of a Kyle McAllister brace, either side of goals from Jordan Moore-Taylor and Harry Whitwell, and gave an honest assessment of proceedings post-match.

When asked on his thoughts straight after the game, he said:

“Emotional”.

“You work Monday, Tuesday, Saturday for the game, focusing on what you’re going to do, how you’re going to play and then you give a penalty away in the third minute, and then half that goes out the window.”

“They get momentum, they get better. I hate to say it, but there’s no point lying about it: they were better than us. We’re a good team, they were better than us. We’re athletic, they were better than us. We just weren’t reliable enough for the ball, every time we got the ball into a decent area, we’d give it away. Yeah, they punished us.”

With a quick turnaround up next, with two games in three days to come, Morison emphasised the brutality of the fixture schedule, but highlighted how it will allow his side to move on from this defeat.

“Fortunately, we don’t have time to dwell on it too much because we’ve got to go again in 48 hours. Scunthorpe are home, they’ve had the week off, so we definitely can’t get outrun on Saturday. That was the most disappointing thing, sometimes you’re a bit emotional, a bit lost for words. It’s going to be a tough one. “We have to [move on], don’t we? The brutality of this game is there for everyone to see.”

“Yeah, working as hard as we can to prepare for the game. We won’t get back till late tonight, so tomorrow’s a write-off. We’ll have to try and put this game to bed and focus on Scunthorpe as quick as possible. This is the job as a professional football player, which they are and we are as professional staff full-time, then we have to just recover in the best way we can, and I need to do my job, which is try and pick a team to win the game. Yeah, this is the toughest part of football. This is the side of it that people don’t quite understand is that it’s an emotional rollercoaster every day. and you’re up, you’re down, you get kicked in the teeth, and then you’re on top of the world and it’s just trying to manage that and we need to be really good as staff to make sure the lads are in the right place, and then obviously we hope that we get them mentally into a good position ready for Saturday.”

Morison also gave a special mention to all 81 supporters who turned up to The New Lawn midweek and stayed throughout.

“Thanks for the fans staying as well because they could have easily gone home, but they didn’t, they stayed, they clapped the lads off, they stuck by them and we really do appreciate that, and as I said, they go everywhere and they were excellent. Obviously they’re going to have bad journey home, as will we, but we’ve got to pick ourselves up. We haven’t got a choice; Friday morning and get ourselves ready for a huge home game. It’s now massive.”
