Steve Morison admitted that nothing changes for himself and his squad after picking up their first win of the season.
The U’s finally sealed a long-awaited maiden three points of 2025/26, as well as picking up their first win at home since January, with goals from Edon Pruti and David Ogbonna putting relegated side Carlisle United to the sword.
It was a performance of worthy of the victory, with a monstrous display at the back blending with a threatening attack that allowed Morison’s side to play with freedom, and the Head Coach even believed it should have been more.
“Yeah, it feels amazing, they deserved that” he said. “To a man, I’ve questioned them all week. People question us, obviously and I know it’s only one win, so I’m not going to get too carried away, but, yeah, we should have been out of sight of that game, absolutely out of sight, and we made it more nervy than it needed to be right out of the death. We deserved a clean sheet, I felt.”
“It was an excellently taken goal from David [Ogbonna] to win the game and if anyone had any doubts that they’re playing for this football club, we just saw that out there, so yeah, proud as punch and really, really pleased. It gives us hopefully something to build on and start our season so yeah, really, really pleased.”
Morison’s reaction to the second goal was one rife with emotion, with the Head Coach revealing what was said in the dugout in the build-up to the goal.
“The emotion was because we’ve got Jon [Meeney] saying “we’re not set, don’t kick it” to Simo, and then he kicks it, and then David is through and he scores, it was just one of those.”
“It’s the closest you can get to as a player to scoring a goal is your team doing what you ask and winning games of football and nothing’s changed. Our processes are still the same because we believe in what we do and you have to have a greater belief than just winning, losing, winning, losing because you do that every minute of the day when you’re a footballer and you have to have a bit more control over that and yeah, look, as I said to the players on Tuesday, the amount of effort that they all put in every day, the amount of effort that the staff put in, and people like Jon Meeney who go above and beyond, and yeah, I was buzzing for him as much as myself.”
“It’s a good win against a good team and I thought we more than matched them. If I was going to be really miserable or disappointed, we didn’t get more goals.”
As for the first goal, Albania youth international Pruti got his first goal in Sutton colours with a bullet header from Jack Wadham’s corner, putting the cherry on top of a display which won him Man of the Match come full time.
“I think to a man, it’s been really difficult to pick a Man of the Match. I thought, barring the first five or ten minutes where we gave him a bit too much respect.”
“Edon [Pruti]’s header was good, we worked really hard on set plays and I’m pleased we managed to get one today.”
There was also room in the team for a debut, with new recruit Noa Boutin coming straight into the team due to Liam Vincent’s suspension and Eduino Vaz’s injury.
“I thought Noa [Boutin] was fantastic. I thought the best thing about today with him was about 20 minutes into the game he’s telling the back three to get up and he’s demanding.”
“I hope he’ll be a really big player for us and I’m really pleased to have him on board.”
