Omar Mussa says Sutton United’s ambition and the chance to work under Chris Agutter were key factors behind his move to Gander Green Lane, as he looks to take the next step in his career.

The midfielder joins the U’s after spending the 2025/26 season with Wealdstone, arriving with experience across Belgium, the EFL, non-league football and the international stage with Burundi, to add an endless array of qualities to the heart of Agutter’s midfield.

After completing his medical along with media duties, Mussa sat down with Sutton United FCtv to discuss his journey from Belgium to Britain so far.

“It feels good,” he said.

“I’m buzzing to be here and I’m excited for what’s coming next.”

Born and raised in Belgium, Mussa developed his game in the academy systems of some of the country’s most respected clubs before making the move to England as a teenager, with a brief stint at RSC Anderlecht preceding his first major opportunity within a club’s youth ranks, rising through the system at KV Mechelen prior to his move across Europe.

“The football culture is different,” he explained.

“In Belgium it’s all about technique, being tidy on the ball and breaking lines.

“I think it gave me a really good base before coming to England and learning a different side of the game.”

Having spent the past season across London with Wealdstone, the midfielder believes Sutton offered the perfect environment for his next challenge, with his stint at Grosvenor Vale his first taste of Step One football since his spells at Dover Athletic, Weymouth and Dagenham & Redbridge, opting to drop into the sixth tier for a shot at promotion with Torquay United prior to his return to the capital.

Non-League had followed on from him gaining his footballing education in Belgian academies before earning a move to League One side Walsall, but the Burundi international believes there is still much more to come.

“For me, Sutton is a very big club,” he said.

“The ambition of what we want to achieve this season really appealed to me.

“Chris [Agutter] played a very big part in me coming here.

“The way he wants his teams to play excites me, and I know his system very well.”

“I’m on the right path, but I feel like I’m only halfway there. I’m looking for very big things and I think Sutton United is a club that can help me get to the next level.”

Since leaving the EFL, the midfielder has impressed at a host of clubs in the National League – and briefly in the National League South – with supporters across those clubs praising his creativity and technical quality, namely during his time in the South of England with Weymouth and Torquay.

Most notably, his spell with the latter proved particularly memorable as the Gulls pushed for promotion in a dramatic title race that went down to the final day, with Truro City coming out on top over both Mussa’s Torquay as well as Agutter’s Worthing side.

“Weymouth did everything for me and took really good care of me,” he said.

“Then Torquay was special because I became happy again, I became myself again.”

“We missed out [on the league title] by one point, but it reminded me of who I am and what I want to compete for: I want to win things.”

“It was exciting. It was a good type of nervous and a really good experience.”

Describing his game, the midfielder says supporters can expect a player willing to take risks in pursuit of victory.

“I like playing forward and breaking lines,” he said.

“I take a lot of risks – I’d rather be judged for trying to make something happen than playing safe.”

“As long as people know I’m risking everything to help the team win, that’s all that matters.”

“The gaffer has tried to sign me three times, and unfortunately it didn’t happen before, but I think this is the right time.”

“I think something big is coming.”

As for his ambitions at Sutton United, the 25-year old preferred to keep those close to his chest, though with one thing he is certain about – his excitement for the challenge ahead.

“I’ll keep those to myself,” he smiled.

“Most of the time when I keep my goals private, they happen, so I’m not trying to jinx anything!”

“I’m just buzzing to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”
