A fans’ favourite has returned to Gander Green Lane, with Ashley Nadesan making the permanent switch to SM1 following a successful loan spell last season.
Having been released from Gillingham last month, Naders was raring to go with his new home, and arrived at the club bright and early to sign his new deal, before sitting down with SUFCtv to discuss the season ahead.
“It’s good to get it over the line” Ashley said, “I had a nice conversation with the gaffer the other day about what he expects and I’m looking forward to getting going.”
“I know the club well now, I know the players and staff, the style of football that the gaffer and [Jon] Meeney wants to play, I think that persuaded me the most and obviously, with the conversation with the gaffer what he wants to do next season.”
“This possibility was first mentioned to me a couple weeks ago. I’ve been on a few holidays so to get here and actually get it over the line, yeah it’s a good feeling.”
The 30-year old makes the permanent drop into non-league now, having spent the bulk of his career so far in League Two with extended spells at Fleetwood Town and Crawley Town, either side of two loan spells at Carlisle United.
“It was a difficult decision yeah, but obviously you want to enjoy football I think mostly and at Sutton last year I enjoyed my time here; scoring goals, assists, all the lads here are good lads and they respected me as one of the elders I think. Hopefully I can bring the same energy, banter and everything this year and hopefully we can get a few more wins.”
“It’s going to be good [to walk out at Gander Green Lane as a permanent player], obviously I’ve had a few loans, but being permanent, knowing that you’re actually one of the lads, yeah it’s going to feel amazing.”
Nadesan also commented the 2024/25 season, but stressed the importance of improvement after a 12th place finish in the National League last term.
“I think personally I can do more for the team, obviously more goals. I came in and played wide and enjoyed it, but hopefully I can play more as a striker this year. As a team we weren’t the best at home, we were good away because we were good on the counter, but if we’re going to do anything this year we need to improve the home form and hopefully with the fans behind us, we’ll be able to do that.”
“It was good to get the deal over the line, I was a free agent with nowhere to go, but it’s good to get it over the line, come back for pre-season in a couple weeks, raring to go, fit and ready and hopefully we get a good start.”
