Former AFC Wimbledon stalwart Will Nightingale has spoken of his pride after completing a move to Sutton United, describing the switch as an exciting new chapter in a career built on resilience, leadership and over 200 first-team appearances.

The defender arrives at Gander Green Lane following almost two decades with Wimbledon, where he progressed through the academy, captained the club, and became a key figure across more than 200 senior games.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he said.

“It seems like a really exciting time to be at this football club. I’m over the moon.”

Reflecting on his long spell with Wimbledon, Nightingale admitted he leaves with nothing but pride and gratitude.

“Just proud memories, to be honest,” he said.

“I feel very lucky. I’m fortunate that I had that experience to play for the team I grew up with and come through.

“I was lucky enough to have over 200 games and even captain them, which was brilliant.”

During his time at Plough Lane, the defender experienced promotions, relegation battles and long spells in League One, all of which he says have helped shape him as a player prepared for the demands of Sutton’s ambitions.

He also wore the captain’s armband at Wimbledon and was part of the club’s leadership group, something he says comes naturally through his approach to the game.

“I’ve got different experiences,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to have promotion and then spend six years in League One. Every player has to draw on their experiences and bring whatever they have to the table.”

“I always try and drive standards anyway, in training and in games. I’ll always give 100%.”

“When I was 23 I was lucky enough to get the captaincy, and you just take on that responsibility. You do whatever you can for the football club you’re playing for.”

His career has also been defined by setbacks, including injuries that tested his resilience over the years.

“You always look back and think ‘what if’, but everything happens for a reason,” he said.

“I feel like I’m quite a resilient person. I’ll always try to help people around me and get the best out of those around me.”

Asked about the key ingredients for success at Sutton United’s level, Nightingale highlighted togetherness and consistency as non-negotiables, and added that supporters can expect commitment, leadership and composure in possession from himself.

“Togetherness is massive,” he said.

“Consistency, and a winning mentality in general. If you can bring those things together, you’re in a great place.”

“I’m someone who loves to win.”

“Someone who never gives up, who puts his body on the line and does everything for the club and the team.”

“But I also like getting on the ball and helping build play.”

Looking ahead to the new season, the defender made clear that Sutton’s ambitions match his own.

“You have to aim as high as you can,” he said.

“If you don’t turn up giving 100%, there’s no point.”

“I want to have a successful season and a successful time here. I believe we can do that.”
