Sutton United Football Club is delighted to confirm the return of Toby Byron on a permanent deal from Worthing.
The tall centre back, who can also fill in at left back, rejoins Sutton after a stint in the U’s academy, as well as reuniting with Chris Agutter having been signed by the Head Coach last summer, and departs Woodside Park after appearing 28 times this season.
Hailing from Watford, Byron’s career began in the Luton Town academy and impressed up to the Hatters’ Under-18s, before gaining senior exposure during a work experience loan at Hitchin Town.
He later exited Kenilworth Road in order to join Hendon, following on from a brief stint in Sutton’s academy, appearing twice for the first team in the Surrey Senior Cup, before beginning to work his way up non-league football with the Greens, across two stints either side of a spell at Hertford Town, which preceded a move to Colney Heath.
Byron then spent a little over a year overseas in 2022, initially in Greece with Ermis Meligous before moving to French side US Ivry, before returning to England with Hornchurch ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The 25-year old spent just a few months in Upminster before joining Folkestone Invicta, making his debut in a 3-1 defeat to the U’s rivals Carshalton Athletic, before being lured away by the interest of Wingate & Finchley and a return to North London, where he claimed the Supporters’ Player of the Season and Manager’s Player of the Season awards after a stellar campaign with the Blues.
As such, he was rewarded with a move up to the National League South and Worthing, and he has been a regular figure at the heart of the Rebels’ backline, helping them sit third in the division with the fifth best defensive record, and was nominated for the Enterprise National League South Player of the Month Award in December.
The opportunity to reunite with his former boss, as well as another jump up the divisions, has proved too good to turn down for the versatile defender though, who will end the campaign in the National League after completing a switch to Sutton.
After putting pen to paper on his return to Gander Green Lane, Byron said:
“It feels great. It’s been a few years ago since I was here, but I’m back, older, and I’m ready to get going.
I’m just excited that it’s over the line and obviously I’ve played with Agi before at Worthing, so I’m just excited to get back into it and hopefully good things to come next season as well.”
He will wear the number 51 for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.
Welcome back to Sutton, Toby!
