David Ogbonna was full of praise for his teammates after his side earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory against AFC Telford United in the FA Cup, securing a place in the Second Round.
His instinctive finish set the tone for the performance, latching onto Jayden [Harris]’s low cross with an improvised touch that looped beyond the goalkeeper, and the forward was quick to highlight the team’s resilience and attacking intent after a lively contest.
“I think it was pretty up and down at the start,” David admitted. “We didn’t really get control early on, but once we settled into our rhythm and started attacking, we looked really dangerous. We could’ve had two, three, maybe even four, but I’m just proud of the win.”
“It [the goal] just happened,” he explained. “I saw Jayden about to square it, the ball was coming from behind me, so I flicked it and it went in.”
Since joining from Slough Town in the summer, Ogbonna has adjusted quickly to life at a higher level and believes his recent form shows he was ready to make the step up, as well as speaking highly of the impact made by manager Chris Agutter.
“I think I’ve managed it well,” he said. “When I first joined, I said I was ready to come here and make the step, and I feel like I’m proving that now. The fans have been brilliant with me too.”
“It’s been really good under Chris,” he added. “Training has been high intensity and very focused. The lads are enjoying it and we’re looking forward to every game.”
After a difficult few weeks, the forward described the win as a crucial confidence boost for both players and supporters, with attention now turning to Wednesday night’s clash with Eastleigh, where Ogbonna hopes the team can continue their momentum.
“It feels amazing,” he said. “These are the wins we need, wins build confidence, and that momentum can carry us forward in the league.”
“This result will definitely help, the fans being behind us makes a huge difference. We’ll bring that same energy and hopefully get another win.”
